Join Top Hat and the Office of Digital Learning on April 9 and 10 for a series of interactive workshops and sessions. You’ll learn more about the centrally-funded pilot program with Top Hat, the support available to you (including content transfer!) and how Top Hat can help you drive student engagement before, during and after class.
This pilot is funded through the University of Nevada, Reno’s Provost Office and will provide all faculty, staff and students with access to Top Hat’s engagement tools at no additional cost. The pilot officially starts in Fall 2024, but is available through Spring 2024 for any interested faculty.
Feel free to attend select sessions or enjoy the full program on both days. Either way, we’re happy to have you. All sessions will be held at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center in Room 221 (the Nook!), 1664 N Virginia St, Reno, NV 89512.

How I Taught This, Faculty Spotlight with Dr. Dennis Mathew
Join us for an interactive course walkthrough with Dr. Dennis Mathew at the College of Science, where he will share his experiences implementing Top Hat to drive in-class engagement and boost student comprehension. Dr. Mathew will also provide insight on migrating his materials into the Top Hat platform as well as the options available to deliver interactive learning experiences when teaching with an iPad.
Speaker Bio: Dennis Mathew joined the University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Biology on a tenure-track appointment in July 2014. He received tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor in July 2020. He has authored numerous research and review articles in scientific journals (PubMed Bibliography). His research on the neuroscience of olfaction has been supported by NIH, USDA, and DoD grants. In addition to his position in the Department of Biology, Dennis co-directs the University’s Integrative Neuroscience Graduate Program; he directs an NIH-ENDURE training program for undergraduate researchers from underrepresented backgrounds.

Dynamic Lecturing with Top Hat presented by Professor Samantha Bickert
Embark on a transformative journey, no matter where you are on your Top Hat journey, from beginner to expert. In this session you will learn about how to combine evidence-based teaching practices with the power of Top Hat to deliver flexible, meaningful and student-centered learning in your courses. You’ll also have an opportunity to hear from Professor Samantha Bickert on her experience with implementing Top Hat and its impact on student interaction.
Speaker Bio: Professor Bickert is currently a lecturer that teaches Business Communication. Her expertise is in leadership, specifically in youth-serving organizations. She has over 10 years of experience leading teams and facilitating training sessions in leadership development, volunteer management, communications, conflict management, and program coordination.
