COVID-19: We’re making Top Hat free of charge

We share the concerns of professors and administrators navigating through the incredibly disruptive challenges from COVID-19.

This is why we are making the Top Hat platform available free of charge for the rest of the semester to active classes transitioning to Top Hat.

Top Hat can help you complete your semester if…

You need to host a live class remotely

You can ensure your students join the class and still participate in real time with Top Hat. Simulate a live lecture with Zoom and Top Hat.

  • Use Zoom to run your video lecture
  • Use Top Hat to take online attendance
  • Use Top Hat to quiz your class for participation during the lecture

Host a live discussion via Top Hat by presenting a discussion question at a pre-set time

You’ve canceled classes and will deliver content via readings and assignments

Make sure you’re keeping track of students’ progress with auto-graded assessment questions embedded throughout your course content.

  • Guide student learning step-by-step with reading materials, interactive media, and assessment questions you can organize all in one place (using Top Hat’s pages module)
  • Use Loom or video capture software of your choice to embed lecture recordings in students’ learning materials
  • Make your existing lecture slides available for students to review at their own pace

You need to replace in-person tests and exams

Top Hat allows professors to administer secure, proctored tests that students can take on their own devices, at a pre-set time and from any location.

NEW! Remote proctoring functionality allows you to:

  • Verify identities to ensure that the right students are taking your test
  • Monitor student activity and generate an easy-to-understand proctor report that flags irregular student behavior
  • Assess students using 14 question types—including multiple choice, word answer, fill in the blank, matching, and long answer
  • Instantly grade and analyze student performance—auto-grade exams upon submission

Sticking to your LMS vs. using Top Hat

Your LMS may already support many of these features. We encourage you to contact your Center for Teaching and Learning as an important first step.

However, many professors prefer to have all content (readings, assessments, lecture content) in one place to guide students through the process of learning independently—which is where Top Hat comes in.
