This textbook is designed for a one-semester undergraduate course that teaches business problem-solving strategies using the mathematical tools of algebra, calculus, and statistics. A basic background in college-level algebra and statistics is expected; therefore, this course is typically available to college sophomores and juniors. An economics principles course is also highly recommended. Smart business decision-making requires the use of mathematical tools. Often, students have the tools but are not aware of when, where, or how to apply them. The purpose of this textbook/course is to bridge that gap in understanding and foster the use of quantitative techniques with an applied, hands-on approach. The text is divided into four units, which should be covered in the order presented as the material builds on itself. Units 1 and 2 move the student from using clunky, simple algebra to precalculus and the more efficient tools of calculus. Unit 3 builds upon basic probability and statistics, and strengthens student understanding of descriptive statistics and probability distributions. Unit 4 builds off these new strengths to develop proficiency in understanding and performing regression analysis and other advanced management-related optimal decision strategies. This 3rd edition offers a strategic rearrangement of topics, as well as a move from the use of implicit differentiation to partial differentiation to align with the skills needed in upper-level coursework. The new edition also adds valuable new content (e.g., financial ratios) and is also fully integrated into an online platform with imbedded assignments for ease of use and automated feedback on student performance.
