Value Added Measures
Value added measures quantify the effect that individual teachers have on student learning through a term. Statistical algorithms and standardized test results, along with other information about a student, are used to create value added scores. Administrators use these value added scores, along with classroom observations, to make choices regarding an instructor’s tenure, compensation or employment.
Value added measures isolate an individual teacher’s contribution to student learning from other factors that can influence students’ academic achievement, such as family income level. Value added measures in education also consider previous test scores of a teacher’s students along with some personal information. Test scores can be compared to the learning plan that students are on and their parents’ education, for example.
