Social Responsibility
Social responsibility describes the awareness, understanding and appreciation of people and surrounding environments. Students who are socially responsible seek out ethical and respectful ways to engage with their peers and the world around them. Social responsibility includes four core tenets. They are: building relationships, contributing to the community and caring for the environment, resolving problems, and valuing diversity.
Social responsibility refers to students taking accountability for their actions and the effect their behavior has on people and the environment. Social responsibility examples include engaging in and fostering rational discussions, advocating for environmental sustainability and volunteering within one’s local community. Educators may support social responsibility by amplifying their institution’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts, promoting classroom sustainability and spotlighting humanitarian activities for students to complete as extra credit.
