What is an

Academic Hold

An academic hold is a type of restriction imposed by a school to prevent students from enrolling in classes or gaining access to their university’s services. An academic hold may be imposed if a student does not pay their tuition fees or fails to return school property such as books or computers. In certain circumstances, this type of hold may halt the release of a student’s academic transcript until the hold is resolved.

An academic hold refers to a form of penalization if a student neglects to declare their major, fails to pay outstanding fees, engages in plagiarism or falls below good academic standing. The last instance is a form of academic probation, whereby students are given a semester to demonstrate that they have made the necessary academic progress.
