Information literacy describes the ability to a) uncover relevant data, b) understand how it is produced and valued and c) use that information to create new meaning. Information literacy is a key soft skill because it allows students to check for bias and validity when interpreting results. Information literacy is closely linked with research and analytical skills, which are skills students will need when completing academic research and in their future careers.
Information literacy involves seeking out the relevant information needed to solve a problem and being able to evaluate its reliability and validity. In a world with technology proliferation, information literacy is an essential skill that will help students derive meaning from various sources they come across. Examples of information literacy include: accessing peer-reviewed information from a database and completing a literature review that critically evaluates research journals retrieved online.
