Academic press, sometimes referred to as a university press, is a publishing house associated with a post-secondary institution. The press specializes in publishing scholarly works, many of which are authored by faculty members. Most large research universities house an academic press. Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press are the two oldest and largest academic presses in the world.

Academic press refers to a university’s publishing house dedicated to publishing academic monographs and scholarly articles. Most academic presses are non-profit. As such, some presses may sell textbooks and larger reference works, which sell more copies.
