OUR VIEW OF THE WORLD
“… the experiences and illuminations of childhood and early youth become in later life the types, standards and patterns of all subsequent knowledge and experience, or as it were, the categories according to which all later things are classified — not always consciously, however.
And so it is that in our childhood years the foundation is laid of our later view of the world,and there with as a well of its superficiality or depth: It will be in later years unfolded and fulfilled, not essentially changed.”
Schopenhauer might have been such a great inspiration to these writers and many others, perhaps because he boldly stated:
"The world is my representation."
And I hope, after journeying through this book, you will boldly state: "The universe and all the galaxies beyond are my representation."
THE WORLD, THE UNIVERSE, AND BEYOND ARE MY REPRESENTATION
As a creative writer you have the power to re-create the world, universe, and beyond for the rest of us.
Your writing becomes a unique exploration and interpretation of what surrounds us.
As a writer you will become a type of scientist, a careful, patient observant!
And that's really cool!
But we can only achieve this unique exploration and interpretation via believable characters.
And more than a character's physical adventures, it is their emotions that make readers love and follow them no matter what world they inhabit and where they journey to!
Think of Katniss Everdeen, Frodo and Harry Potter!
THE PROCESS: READING AS KEY TO BECOMING A WRITER
And speaking of famous fictional characters and the creation of unique worlds...
Becoming a creative writer is closely linked with reading literature.
The more you read other writers, the stronger your own work will become. And after taking this class you will begin to look at the work of other writers through your very own writer's lens.
It is my my hope that this semester you will grow as a writer and understand that developing your writing skills is a similar process as moving from admiring a great painting to figuring out how an artist applied the colors, carefully stroke by stroke, to a canvas.
A process that often takes years, but has wonderful results!

THE HERO and HEROINE'S JOURNEY
Because of The Hunger Games, The Lord of the Ring and Harry Potter films you probably already are familiar with the Heroine and Hero's Journey. But you can review the concept by watching the following video:

THE CREATIVE WRITER'S JOURNEY
Joseph Campbell most famously guided writer/director George Lucas as he completed his story of a young man in another galaxy who needs to find his true path and discover who he truly is.
Joseph Campbell has also helped many others understand that we must all follow our unique paths to discovering our bliss, that is, your true calling and happiness!!!
Perhaps Creative Writing is your true path? Let's figure it out this semester!

I hope that the work we do in this class will be a way for you to creatively better understand yourself and the world.
Creative Writing should be a way to "unfold" and "fulfill" your world as Schopenhauer might say .
Creative Writing is not only a way to look in yourself and out into the world but is also a way to research the present, future and past.
Remember, think of this course as a biology or chemistry class, a research experience!
So, are you ready for this creative journey you have embarked on? I hope so!
But if you don't feel quite ready or feel nervous, don't worry as we will be doing many exercises to help us become stronger creative writers and have some fun along the way!

WHAT ARE OUR GOALS?
1.Increase our knowledge and understanding of a variety of:
- Innovations in contemporary fiction.
2. Practice aspects of fiction writing technique:
- Setting a scene.
- Developing a character.
- Exploring a theme.
- Writing dialogue.
- Understanding point of view.
- Plotting via charting, shaping or storyboarding.
- Creating story map or web.
- Finding the form of your fictional tale.
3. Find your voice through:
- Imaginative and precise word choice.
- Figurative language such as metaphors and similes.
- Integrating sound and cadence into your writing.
4. Practice PROCESS:
- Brain storming.
- Peer review.
- Character sketches.
- Scene descriptions.
- Flash Fiction.
6. Understand how to prepare revised work for submission to:
