Lead Authors

Joseph M. Valenzano III, PhDUniversity of Dayton

Dr. Valenzano received his Ph.D. in Public Communication from the Department of Communication at Georgia State University in 2006. Upon completion of his degree he became the Basic Course Director at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he served for five years. In 2009 the basic course program that he directs received the Basic Course Program of Excellence Award from the Basic Course Division of the National Communication Association. Now, he is the Basic Course Director at the University of Dayton, in Dayton, Ohio. Additionally, Valenzano has authored and co-authored articles on presidential rhetoric, religious rhetoric, and media studies in the Southern Communication Journal, Journal of Media and Religion, and Communication Quarterly.

Melissa Broeckelman-Post, PhDGeorge Mason University

Melissa Broeckelman-Post received her Ph.D. from Ohio University in 2009. She is the Introductory Communication Course Director and an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and a Senior Scholar in the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being at George Mason University. She is responsible for planning, supervising, assessing, and improving the communication courses that meet the general education requirement at GMU. Each year, she is responsible for recruiting, training, and supervising a staff of 50-60 instructors who teach 3700-4000 undergraduate students per year in these courses. In 2016, her program was the recipient of the NCA Basic Course Division Program of Excellence Award, which recognizes introductory communication course programs that can serve as best practice models for programs across the country. In 2015, she was the recipient of the NCA Basic Course Division Textbook of Distinction Award for the textbook that she extensively adapted to meet the specific needs of GMU’s students, instructors, and program.

Stephen W. Braden, PhDGeorge Mason University

Dr. Braden received his PhD in Rhetoric and Public Address from the Department of Speech Communication at Louisiana State University. Braden taught public speaking for 21 years at four universities and was a Public Speaking Coordinator at Georgia State University. In 2004, he was awarded the John I. Sisco Excellence in Teaching Award from the Southern States Communication Association, the organization’s top teaching award. Braden passed away on June 4, 2017.
