DePaul University Guide To Meaningful & Transformative Writing

Erin Workman, Victoria Hohenzy, Erin MacKenna-Sandhir

The DePaul University Guide to Meaningful and Transformative Writing introduces students to the writing culture at DePaul and engages them in reflecting on their cultural literacy practices and rhetorical traditions, developing a conceptual vocabulary for articulating their knowledge about writing and studying their own writing processes, and expanding their repertoire of writing strategies, practices, processes, and tools. Informed by research on how writers develop and transfer knowledge across contexts, this text empowers students to recognize and honor the diverse literacy and rhetorical practices they bring with them to first-year writing while also setting individual learning goals and intentionally crafting a theory of writing and writing toolkit that will support them in successfully navigating the many writing situations they’ll encounter in academic, professional, civil, and social spaces. Designed to support students in creating writing projects that are meaningful to them and that have the power to transform self and society, the DPU Guide offers key concepts and writing activities through which students will develop—or further strengthen—their self-confidence as writers as they become agents of their own lifelong learning.
